Behaviour

Responsible, Respectful and Ready - the 3Rs. 

At South Lake we develop children’s character through our ‘3Rs’ curriculum. In order to build character, we define the behaviours and habits that we expect children to demonstrate. We want to support our pupils to grow into adults who are polite, respectful and appreciative, and who consider the needs of others. We aim to equip our children with the skills and knowledge to do what they know is right without extrinsic rewards or threats of punishment. 

We believe that, as pupils practise these prosocial behaviours over time, they become habits that positively shape how they feel about themselves and how other people perceive them.

You won't see stickers and certificates for behaviour at South Lake, but you will see warm, supportive relationships and consistent verbal recognition of where children make positive choices.

Anti - Bullying

At South Lake, it is very important to us that the children are happy.

We teach the children to be kind to each other, in their words and in their actions. We also teach them, through PSHE lessons and circle times, what bullying looks like and who to go to in school for help if they are unhappy.

The Anti-Bullying Alliance defines bullying as: the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power.

We strongly believe that a joint and open approach with the parents of a child who feels bullied is the most effective way to tackle it.

If you have concerns that your child is being bullied at school, we want to hear from you!  Please contact Mrs Stobie, our Family Support Adviser, or Mrs Butler-Willis, the Headteacher. Call, email or speak to one of us before school on the playground. 

 South Lake Anti - Bullying Procedures

If a parent or carer comes to report a concern about bullying, we will:

Speak to the child who has been affected, to get a clear picture of events.

Meet with the child or children thought to be causing the issues and deal with disciplinary matters according to school policy; e.g if a child has been hurt.  Set out expectations and how this will be monitored. 

Assign an anti-bullying mentor to check in daily with the affected child, usually after lunch and play times, until they feel they no longer need this.

Meet with the affected child again to inform them of the arrangements, reassure them and ask them to let us know if any further issues occur. We will ask you to help us with this.

For older children, we sometimes draw up an anti-bullying contract, which is signed by both parties. This is then reviewed with both children after 6 weeks, by a senior member of staff.
